Murray Method® in Ukraine

Providing treatment for high-crisis trauma

Dr. Ruslan Ilchenko and his wife Ludmila have been dedicated practitioners of the Murray Method® since 2003. As active Murray Method® instructors, they established a center in Poltava, Ukraine, “The Way Out” which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.

When war erupted in Ukraine in 2022, the Ilchenkos and their staff immediately mobilized to address the overwhelming trauma experienced by civilian refugees. During this first critical year, staff members drove rented buses to the front lines and rescued over 2,000 persons out of bombed apartments. They also drove vans to the multitude of villages devastated by artillery, delivering food, medicine, and necessities which became the sole source of survival for many war victims.

The team provided free therapy sessions to individuals in civilian refugee centers. However, it became obvious that deeper therapeutic intervention was greatly needed. This led to the establishment of the Murray Method® War Trauma Treatment Rehabilitation Center in January 2023.

This specialized rehabilitation center is the only in-patient facility in Ukraine dedicated specifically to treating civilian war victims. It provides free in-patient treatment to 50 war victims each month, using the Murray Method® as its primary therapeutic approach. The effectiveness of this methodology in addressing severe high-crisis trauma has been demonstrated through successful treatment of over 1,300 civilian victims of war.

Growing Demand for Training

The center’s exceptional results have gained national recognition, creating strong demand for Murray Method® training among therapists throughout Ukraine and Western Europe. Dr. Ilchenko recently received a grant from the United Nations and the European Union that funded Murray Method® Level I training for 120 Ukrainian therapists.

However, the need far exceeds current resources:

  • Over 800 additional therapists remain on a waiting list for initial training
  • All participants are requesting access to Levels II and III to complete their certification

Funding for this critical professional training is urgently needed, in addition to covering the monthly operational expenses of the treatment center.

The work being done in Poltava exemplifies how the Murray Method® can be adapted to address even the most profound trauma, offering hope and healing in circumstances of extreme crisis. Patients who complete this program leave with a transformative confidence in their ability to survive, maintaining a deep sense of internal value and courage for the future.

Supporting This Critical Work

Because all services and training sessions are provided free of charge, we are continuously seeking additional benefactors to help sustain the substantial funding needed for this specialized work. Even when the war eventually ends, there will remain a tremendous demand for high-crisis trauma treatment among the countless Ukrainians suffering from PTSD. Having this in-patient facility plus many trained clinicians throughout the country will be essential for Ukraine’s long-term healing and recovery.

Marilyn Murray established Health Restoration International, Ltd. (HRI) in 2004 as a non-profit foundation to support Murray Method® work throughout the former Soviet Union. Since the war in Ukraine began in 2022, many caring individuals have offered support through contributions to HRI. Importantly, HRI retains no administrative fees—100% of all donations go directly to Dr. Ruslan and his staff. HRI is a 501(c)(3) foundation, making all donations fully tax-deductible.
